Google Analytics Tip – Duplicate Profiles

Check out the Google Analytics Blog, for their second tip, straight from Google Analytics Team. Last week’s topic was focused on referral segmentation. This week’s topic is regarding the creation of duplicate profiles to test filters and goals.

“One simple yet powerful way to avoid incorrect modifications is to use duplicate profiles to test out changes to your account settings. This way, you can ensure that you have implemented the settings correctly without affecting the data in your main profile. When you duplicate profiles, the new data you collect appears in several profiles at once, letting you manipulate the duplicate data in different ways. You can then keep the original profile unaltered so it can contain every piece of data collected by the tracking code on your site”

GA’s directions are problematic. I’ve duplicated a profile (per their directions) and I’m being told to insert tracking code. Do you know why the duplication wasn’t successful?

    Thanks,
    Chris

I asked Justin Cutroni (A Google Analytics Consultant) of http://cutroni.com/blog/ and he says the instructions from the Google Analytics are correct.

From Justin: “When one views the list of all the account profiles the following message appears in the status column for the new profile:

    Tracking Unknown – Check Status

In reality, there is no reason to check the status. GA has not added any data to that profile yet. That’s why you get the ‘Check Status’ message. Once GA processes the site data the Status colum will indicate that everything is ok.”

Thanks. I’ll test it out. It’s certainly not intuitive though.

    Hi,

I have a quick query too, been looking at some of the more advanced functions of google analytics and have been creating some profiles for viewing my sites with different filters applied.

I’ve noticed that when I add a new website profile and select the add using existing domain option, I have two options for the same domain each with different tracking codes. Is there a way to remove this obsolete domain and keep the relevant one?
