Gmail Updates Contact Manager

Manoj Jasra - Thursday, July 17, 2008 1 Comments

Yesterday the Gmail Blog mentioned that Gmail will be updating its contact management system to help reduce the amount of clutter. Currently, the clutter arises from all contacts getting added to a user's address book automatically. To help add some much needed organization, Gmail will be rolling out a system in which Google will arrange the contacts into two groups: "My Contacts" and "Suggested Contacts."

My Contacts contains the contacts you explicitly put in your address book (via manual entry, import or sync) as well as any address you've emailed a lot (we're using five or more times as the threshold for now).

Suggested Contacts is where Gmail puts its auto-created contacts. By default, Suggested Contacts you email frequently are automatically added to My Contacts, but for those of you who prefer tighter control of your address books, you can choose to disable usage-based addition of contacts to My Contacts (see the checkbox in the screenshot above). Once you do this, no matter how many times you email an auto-added email address it won't move to My Contacts.

What about the "Most Contacted" feature? I mean, GMail should do something about the "Most Contacted" feature. Here is the problem that I have with the "Most Contacted", for example, let's say that I just sent an email to contact "a", and of course, as always, there will be a copy of the email under "Most Contacted", I would like to delete that without actually delete contact "a" from my "Contacts" list. Also, I've been suggesting GMail to have more colors for the labels. The default colors, not enough. Not just me, but everyone else (GMail users), we all wanted to have that and many other things. By us making suggestions, we only want GMail to be better, hence, which benefits GMail and us, the users. Also, when printing from the inbox, we, well at least I, wanted to be able to print the outlook of the Inbox, I have to give Yahoo! the credit for having that. Also, give us the ability to change the page's color (theme's color, well, you guys know what I mean), etc ... there are plenty more, trust me, I only could think of a few things now. Until the day that GMail could meet or exceed the users' expectations, GMail ultimately still not the BEST in email network provider.
