iPhone App Design Techniques

Late last week the Smashing Magazine blog discussed the latest in iPhone App design techniques, it was an absolute must read for people wanting to jump into the app development game. Frankly, you may have the hottest new idea for an iPhone app but if you don’t give enough emphasis to usability, layout, and appearance, you are significantly reducing the chances of your app being truly successful. The Facebook app (below) is actually an example of user experience integrated intelligently into an iPhone app design.

Below is the list from Smashing Magazine:

  1. Mirroring Native iPhone UI Elements
  2. Simplifying The Interface
  3. Hardware-ish Look
  4. Rich, Padded And Pretty List Views
  5. Layered Interface
  6. Icons For The List View
  7. Illustrations in use
  8. Using Gestures

We are actually a huge believer in number one on this list: Mirroring Native iPhone UI Elements. Native elements are implemented so cleanly and intuitively so why mess with a good thing – additionally, why not present iPhone users something they’re familiar with?
