Smartphones in the Hands of 50% of US Mobile Users by the End of Q3 2011

In their latest article, eMarketer highlights the increase in the percentage of the population that is showing interest in purchasing smartphones. According to both Nielson and ChangeWave Research smartphones are expected to be in the hands of 50% of US mobile users by the end of Q3 2011. This means that the days of simple cell phones are steadily coming to an end. Eventually, it seems, smartphones will be ubiquitous and the simpler phones of the past will go extinct.

eMarketer also details the most popular mobile application categories: Social media has shown the greatest growth over the last year (+240%), followed by weather, sports, banking and maps
