8.5 Billion Video Streams on YouTube in January (US)


According to the latest data from Nielsen, online video usage is up 45% from the same time last year. YouTube is still way out in front with 8.5 billion video streams, however it was down 2.6% vs last month. Video rental service, NetFlix was up 37.5% to 200 million streams during the same time.

Microsoft sites were the fastest-growing video brand month-over-month, increasing 26.1% to 17.3 million unique viewers.

158 Million People in the US Will Watch Video Content Online in 2011

In their latest report eMarketer estimates that in 2011, 68.2% of US internet users, or 158.1 million people, will be watching video content online each month. By 2015, that figure will increase to 76% of internet users, or 195.5 million people. In the same period, online video advertising spending will surge from $1.97 billion to $5.71 billion.

Visits to Quora Tripled in January

According to the latest post on the Hitwise blog, the volume of visits to Quora nearly tripled in January due to considerable coverage from technology news websites. Below are highlights from the post:
  • Search has been the major driver of traffic of Quora over the past 6 months and accounted for nearly 49% of the visits last week.
  • Social Networks like Facebook and Twitter have also been key as users can share their both their questions and answers among their networks.
  • Among the visitors to website, the top 5 Mosaic segments represented 42% of all visits to Quora for the 12 weeks ending February 5, 2011.
  • The large share of the audience tends to be characterized by college-educated professionals, along with students poised to join those same segments following graduation.
  • For example, the largest segment currently visiting Quora is Major University Towns, which is primarily made up of students and young adults under the age of 35.
  • The Young Cosmopolitans segment is another strong segment for Quora, which tends to be the early adopters typically among the first to discover new websites.

Super Bowl Sets Tweets Per Second Record – Sporting Event

Very interesting chart on the Twitter blog which shows the total number of #superbowl tweets across the 5 hour span of this year’s Super Bowl. During the 5 hours, the average tweets per second (TPS) was 3,283. There were huge tweet spikes during the Packers’ first and second touchdowns, with the next largest coming at half time when Usher took the stage. At the end of the game, the Super Bowl broke the sporting event TPS record with 4,064.

Bing up 21% in January, Google down 2%

Hitwise announced its monthly search market share data for January 2011. Google accounted for 67.95 percent of all U.S. searches conducted in January 2011. Bing-powered search comprised 27.44 percent of searches for the month. Full highlights below:
  • Google accounted for 67.95% of all U.S. searches conducted in the four weeks ending Jan. 29, 2011.
  • Yahoo! Search and Bing received 14.62% and 12.81%, respectively. Bing.com searches increased 21% in January 2011.
  • Bing-powered search comprised 27.44% of searches for the month, an increase of 6%.
  • Bing and Yahoo! Search achieved the highest success rates in January 2011. This means that for both search engines, more than 81%of searches executed resulted in a visit to a Website. Google achieved a success rate of 65%.
  • Longer search queries — five to eight words — were up 5% from December 2010 to January 2011. Shorter search queries — those averaging one to four words long — decreased 1% from December 2010 to January 2011. Two-word searches comprised the majority of searches, amounting to 23.59% of all queries.
  • Out of all paid clicks to the top 500 retail sites, Amazon captured the majority of traffic, or 11.25% of all paid clicks for the four weeks ending Jan 29, 2011.
