Search Engines Not Indexing Your FeedBurner Feed?

If you’re a FeedBurner user, you may have had some issues with your feeds in the last couple of weeks. This includes issues with displaying your feed in addition to getting accurate subscriber numbers from FeedBurner.

However, have you also had issues with your feed’s URL being indexed in Google at all? I am not sure why I didn’t catch this before but if you login to your FeedBurner account >> go to publicize >> then go the very last link on the bottom left titled: “No Index.” By default, “Indicate that your feed should not be indexed by search engines” is checked and therefore your Feed will not be indexed in any Search Engine.

One thing you should consider before changing this default option is whether your content is updated frequently enough so that you don’t trip any duplicate content filters (between your blog and your FeedBurner feed). You should also consider the number of items you display on your blog’s home page vs. your feed – this may also get you into some duplicate content issues if they are too alike. However if you post unique content and you post often, you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

FeedBurner Reporting Netvibes Again

Many bloggers around the industry noticed a slight drop in feed subscribers (as reported in FeedBurner) in the past week due to a Netvibes update. Now depending on your share of Netvibes subscribers, you could have been affected very little or quite heavily. We actually noticed an 18% decrease this past week but are happy to report that FeedBurner is once again reporting Netvibes subscribers.

Google Feed Reader Count Missing

This past Saturday I noticed a major decrease in my feed subscriber count so I logged into FeedBurner to investigate a bit further and discovered that subscribers using Google reader were missing. I am sure this is temporary because I have seen similar things happen to both Bloglines and NetVibes in the past. After doing a quick check around the blogosphere I confirmed that I am not the only one hit with the missing Google reader count issue.

Below are some screenshots from account, I average approximately 1600 subscribers normally and on Saturday the number was down to 904.

Increasing Feed Subscribers: Tips and Resources

Feed subscribers are quite possibly your most loyal readers therefore it’s important to grow your subscriber community as much as possible. With Google’s purchase of FeedBurner as well as their own proprietary subscriber calculating technology don’t be surprised to see feed subscribers becoming a variable in Google’s ranking algorithm. In today’s post we’ll talk about how to increase your feed subscribers with some very simple tips.

  1. Prominent, Accessible and Ease of Use: Make your subscription buttons available on all pages and place them above the fold. Using technology like FeedBurner you can get a sense of your subscribers’ favorite feed services and begin making subscribing to those services even easier.

  2. Repeat in Footer: Something that has worked well for me is adding the subscription option to the footer of each individual post. What this does is remind visitors to subscribe after reading one of my posts.
  3. Add Option in Emails: In FeedBurner you can also publicize your feed’s content by placing a widget in outgoing emails. Through this widget people can also subscribe to your feed.

  4. Subscribe by Email: Depending on what industry you’re in adding an option to subscribe by email can dramatically increase your subscribers. Many authors of travel sites have noticed that email is even more popular than feed readers.

Increasing Feed Subscribers: Additional Resources

Webmaster Central Adds Subscriber Stats

Late last Friday, Google’s Webmaster Central Blog reported some additional features which included the ability for publishers to see the number of subscribers to their content.

First of all, subscriber stats are now available. Webmaster Tools now show feed publishers the number of aggregated subscribers you have from Google services such as Google Reader, iGoogle, and Orkut. We hope this will make it easier to
track subscriber statistics across multiple feeds, as well as offer an improvement over parsing through server logs for feed information.

I wonder how long will it take before subscriber data from FeedBurner will be integrated into Webmaster Central. The inclusion of the Google subscription services is a great first step but there are many other services that should also be accounted for.

Subscribers are an excellent way for publishers to judge the level of engagement and reach of their blog/website and I imagine that Google will eventually begin to include results from subscription services into Universal Search. With FeedBurner stats such as total subscribers, reach, out going links, item use and incoming links, Google should be able to algorithmically decide which sites will receive precedence for which queries.

Webmaster Tools is also availabe in 20 Languages:

…In addition to US English, UK English, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Russian, Japanese, Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Polish, Webmaster Tools are now in Turkish and Romanian.

FeedBurner Integrates with Blogger

FeedBurner is now integrated with Blogger so that users can redirect their Blog’s feeds over to their FeedBurner Feeds. See the FeedBurner Blog for more information.

Why is redirecting so important?
We’re glad you asked. By redirecting your feed, you can get a true picture of how many subscribers you have. Some of you might even see a few more subscribers magically appear, though results will most certainly vary. Why so? Sometimes, publishers inadvertently fragment their feed audience by offering more than one feed address on the blog itself or within their autodiscovery tags (the method by which feed readers automatically detect the address of your feed for syndication purposes). This results in some subscribers not being counted, and no one wants that in a world where everyone should count for something. By redirecting your feed, you can consolidate any straggler subscribers and greatly improve your ability to effectively measure your audience.

To redirect your Blogger Feed simply log into Blogger, select Site Feed and then update the Post Feed Redirect URL similar to the image below:
