Drag & Drop Attachments in Gmail

The Gmail blog announced a new feature to Gmail that I have been wanting for quite some time: drag & drop attachments, rather than the traditional: add image >> browse >> search/locate >> attach. Google has enabled this capability for both Chrome and Firefox at this time.

Gmail on Nexus One

With the launch of the Nexus One, many of the Google Blogs show how each of the Google segments can leverage the new phone. Below is video discussing Gmail on Nexus One; how you can sync multiple Gmail accounts and switch between them without leaving the app.

Switch to Gmail – Import Your Contacts from Other Providers

The Gmail blog has announced that it’s even easier to make the switch to Gmail since Google has introduced the ability to seamlessly import your contacts from numerous email providers (including Yahoo Mail and Hotmail).

This new feature is available in all newly-created Gmail accounts, and it is slowly being rolled out to all existing accounts. It’ll take longer than the few hours or days that most Gmail features take to get out to everyone. You’ll know it’s on for your account when you see the Accounts and Import tab (formerly just called Accounts) under Settings.

Here are all the different types of email services which you can import contacts from:

Gmail Introduces PowerPoint Slide Show Viewing

The Gmail blog has announced that you now can view PowerPoint files in the same, easy to use format as PDFs. You can navigate between slides by clicking the left and right arrow buttons at the top of the screen, or by choosing a specific slide from the dropdown menu in the upper right corner of the screen. Gmail Surpasses YouTube in Visits – Hitwise

According to the Hitwise Blog, Gmail has surpassed YouTube in terms of the market share of US Internet visits. Here’s the summary:
  • Previously, YouTube consistently ranked 10th among all websites by market share of visits until the week ending Jan. 10, 2009, where Gmail moved up one rank to reach #10. The websites have been swapping positions regularly ever since.
  • Among a custom category of all Google properties, Gmail ranked 2nd behind Google for the week ending Mar. 7th, 2009.
  • Both websites are receiving more visits than one year ago, with a bigger increase in the growth of visits to Gmail. The market share of visits to Gmail has increased 70% for the week ending March 7, 2009 as compared to the same week last year. Visits to YouTube also increased 16% during the same time frame.

iGoogle Introduces Chat Widget

iGoogle continues to get better and better, now you can add a widget featuring the same chat feature that you have grown to love in Gmail. A very cool part of the chat widget within iGoogle is that you can invite non Gmail users to come and talk with you.

All you have to do is invite them as a chat buddy, and if they accept your invitation and sign up for iGoogle with their personal email account, their name becomes just a click away right on your page. Don’t want to be bothered while you’re checking out the latest news or reading your emails? You have a couple of options to hid the chat feature. You can either click the chat “options” link and selecting “hide chat,” or sign off completely by selecting “sign out of chat.”

Differences between chatting in iGoogle and Gmail

iGoogle’s chat feature is integrated into the Google Talk network, so messages you send using Gmail chat, and changes you make to your contacts and status, are fully synchronized. However, the following chat features are available only in Gmail’s chat feature:

  • Pop out windows
  • Offline messages
  • Group chat
  • AIM integration
  • Video chat

Gmail Introduces Multiple Inboxes

Gmail Labs has launched a great new feature which allows users to view multiple panes without having to open numerous browser windows. In order to turn this feature on go into your Gmail Labs settings and enable “Multiple Inboxes.”

“Add extra lists of emails in your inbox to see even more important email at once. The new lists of threads can be labels, your starred messages, drafts or any search you want, configurable under Settings.”
