Interview of VisiStat Analytics CEO: Jim Bennette

Earlier this week, I sat down with Jim Bennette, CEO at VisiStat Analytics. During our discussion Jim and I discussed a number of different topics including analytics trends, business requirements and technology – I also got some great insight into VisiStat analytics. Check out our conversation below:

[Manoj]: What are the key business issues your customers face today (related to web analytics)?

[Jim Bennette]: Well, obviously we are in a difficult economy, and that has had a huge impact on small to medium businesses. More than ever before, companies in the SMB and SME category need to cut costs and drive efficiencies in all areas of their business. This can be especially true for their online initiatives, which are usually a significant expense, but also a key driver of sales. In fact, many of these companies are strictly online businesses, so it is critical that they leverage this important resource to its full extent. Many businesses automatically assume they need to increase marketing spend to drive traffic, but they can actually do much more at existing spend levels if they increase certain efficiencies. Its shocking to me how many online businesses lack clear visibility into what is really happening with their websites and online marketing on a day to day basis.

[Manoj]: Do you believe most companies have a clear understanding as to what can be achieved through web analytics?

[Jim Bennette]: Not really. I think most have a general understanding of what basic web analytics tools such as Google Analytics can do, but there is really so much more that can be done. I also think that many SMB/SME companies are a bit intimidated by some of the large enterprise solutions such as Coremetrics and Omniture, and rightfully so. While these are powerful solutions, they are specifically designed (and priced) for the enterprise market. As I mentioned before, lack of visibility is a big problem for many companies, but analytics can make a big difference. Some web analytics solutions are so complex that it can be very difficult to extract information that is simple and actionable.

[Manoj]:What are the latest advancements in web analytics technologies that we should know about?

[Jim Bennette]: I think one of the more interesting developments is in the sophistication of identifying and tracking of anonymous visitors and their behavior. There has been a lot of front-page news and some controversy around this subject recently. Some see this as a privacy issue, but that’s referring more to tracking tools gaining access to sites without the publisher’s knowledge, and to tracking tools that attempt to collect personal information. Our solution does not capture any personal information, and our customers certainly know they are using it. We simply identify the name of the company that is visiting, and through our integration with Jigsaw (Salesforce.com’s business contact directory) our customers can gather specific contact information to pursue as a new sales lead.

[Manoj]: In general, what trends are you seeing in the web analytics space?

[Jim Bennette]: For the most part, web analytics solutions can be very powerful and generate a lot of really great information. As web analytics solutions become more and more sophisticated, they also generate a lot more data and information. A big and growing problem that we are seeing today is that the sheer volume of information can be a bit too much to process, especially for a small business. That presents a big problem for these companies; they have a whole bunch of great data, but now what do they do with it? Sometimes you can get bogged down by the data and lose sight of the big picture, namely – how is my website and other online initiatives really performing? New prospects ask us this question every single day, which is why our main area of focus and innovation has and always will be in finding ways to make things simple for our customers.

[Manoj]: Where does VisiStat fit in the web analytics ecosystem, and what is your vision for the company moving forward?

[Jim Bennette]: Our solution is really designed specifically for the small to medium businesses and small to medium enterprises. In fact we have over 34,000 SMB/SME users of our solution to date, and that number grows every day. We believe we have a very comprehensive solution that offers a one-stop shop for our target audience, combining a powerful analytics package with lead identification tools as well as online campaign tracking tools. Our mission is to empower and amaze our customers with mission-critical information from their website, and deliver it in a clean, simple format that is easy to understand so they can take immediate action to drive sales and improve marketing ROI. We think that is a pretty powerful value proposition, especially in today’s economic environment.

VisiStat Founder Nominated in National Geographic Photo Contest

In some off topic and exciting news I just became aware of the fact that, VisiStat Analytics’ Co-Founder, Stephen Oachs, has been named as a finalist in National Geographic’s Photo Contest for 3 of his photos.

Below is part of the official press release:

There is one universally recognized magazine that makes the heart of an intrepid outdoor and nature photographer beat a little faster. When Fine Art Photographer and Entrepreneur, Stephen Oachs, learned not one, but three, of his photographs were selected for the National Geographic International Photography Contest, he was thrilled.

Interview with VisiStat, CTO, Stephen Oachs

In the current economy, many Small Business, Small Enterprise, and Marketing professionals are watching their Web spend more closely than ever. I caught up with Stephen Oachs, CTO at VisiStat Inc, and got his take on how important Web analytics is today for effective online advertising and direct impact on a business’s bottom line.

What do you see as the most beneficial change in analytics for the SMB/SME sector?

Without doubt, the move to real-time data, the development of more intuitive and accessible reporting interfaces, and affordability. In the past, analytics services were out of reach from both a comprehension and a cost perspective. But, that has changed dramatically. Today’s services are moving toward a truly intuitive, easy to understand click-and-go delivery of data, which allows for a much wider use by everyone within a business’s structure, from the sales team to R&D, execs to potential clients, and even IT!

In addition, real-time tracking data is available, which has turned analytics into a proactive tool allowing site owners to know what is happening immediately and to be able to respond as activity occurs. There is now real-time cause and effect for their online business components. This can only help to improve decision-making, from ad spend to customer service and every aspect of business in between.

Proper use and understanding of Web analytics data will provide users with an actionable “to-do list” that will give them a competitive advantage in their market space. The SMB/SME user is reaping the advantages of today’s more affordable, more accessible Web analytics. There are now useable tools they can relate to, that are built for them, their needs, with their ROI in mind.

You mentioned analytics tools built for the SMB/SME user, can you explain further?

Small business, small enterprise, and marketing professionals, traditionally do business in an immediate, face-to-face way. They look their customers in the eye; they see direct responses to their TV ads. The handshake and conference room are business tools that are done in the moment, as life happens. What today’s business-friendly analytics reporting tools do is bring traditional real-life business practices online, making the Internet move at the speed of real business, with the additional advantage of being at the business user’s comfort level.

The Web is the most measurable media we have today, yet its measurement is often overlooked and undervalued. However, today, Website usage data is accessible in a familiar language that speaks to the business user, providing truly proactive reporting without breaking the bank.

Can you give me some examples of this type of proactive reporting?

Certainly. Two that come to mind immediately are Conversion Funnel reporting and Global Click Path reports. These deliver powerful feedback for online campaigns, advertising effectiveness, and visitor response and behavior.

Conversion Funnel reporting reveals the progression of steps visitors take on a Website for a specified series of pages, with attention to abandonment rate and abandonment points, which will be especially valuable for users implementing pay-per-click and other marketing campaigns. Conversion Funnels provide enhanced insight into visitor behavior, every step of the way, Web page by Web page.

Global click path reports provide a quick, easy high-level view of page activity, specifically, where visitors travel through a Website, page by page, how long they stay on any given page, and where they exit the site. This is just scratching the surface of a good click path report. It is also an excellent example of how historical data reports can work optimally side-by-side with real-time reports, providing improved data. Such reporting really adds a new dimension to analytics, and we’ve seen incredible user response to these reports at VisiStat.

In June, you released VisiStat 6.0, and now Conversion Funnel and other conversion and marketing reports. What will we see next from VisiStat?

Our developments and innovations are particularly focused on the SMB/SME segment. We have received overwhelming response to our latest conversion, bounce rate and click path reporting, as well as our STATS API, especially at this time of economic uncertainty, when it is vital to have a controllable and proactive strategy for the dollars earmarked for Internet spending.

As for what is next…well, we never sit still. There are always updates and new features being developed, and most come directly from suggestions by our users. Watch http://www.visistat.com/ for upcoming features that utilize StatCasting and user-specific tools in some pretty innovative ways.

VisiStat 6.0: Insight from Co-Founder Tina Bean

In my earlier post today I mentioned VisiStat’s release of their latest version, 6.0. Additionally, I had a chat with Founder & Director of Sales & Marketing, VisiStat, Tina Bean to get her insight on VisiStat 6.0. Below is our conversation.

[Manoj]: How much of on an influence did your clients have on the updates to the new version of VisiStat

[Tina Bean]: Our clients have a huge influence on what they see in version 6.0. In the development of the new version we looked very deeply into user suggestions and built most all of the new features around it. The feature that has been on the “most requested” list has been our STATS API. We’re getting a lot of small enterprise customers who need the ability to pull their raw data out and run queries on their side. They’re very happy to have this.

[Manoj]: Can you talk about the latest updates to the interface?

[Tina Bean]: Sure. You know, it’s really scary making changes to our interface, especially because that’s what seems to be our “secret sauce.” I’m extremely happy with how it turned out. You’ll notice most of the changes on our Launchpad, which is our welcome screen. It incorporates more vital information which stream live as the visitors move through your website. That’s one thing about our VisiStat customers… they want it all and they want it NOW. ;)

[Manoj]: How do you think the new Community Chat functionality will help your support as well as the ability for you to generate ideas for future versions.

[Tina Bean]: The Community Chat is a great forum for VisiStat users to collaborate and share ideas. Periodically we’ll have technical gurus from VisiStat pop in and answer questions, but mostly its for users to ask questions and see how others are using the reporting to improve their business.

[Manoj]: How important do you think it was to introduce the Stats API so that your customers can better integrate their analytics data?

[Tina Bean]: It’s crucial in order to be players in the enterprise space. We have so many fantastic reports, but you can’t be everything to everyone. This API allows them to create what ever custom reports they need.

[Manoj]: What were the reactions to the latest version from your beta testers?

[Tina Bean]: They loved it. We have so many great beta testers who provide valuable feedback during our beta test cycles. They are in the trenches everyday. We rely on them to help us understand how to best hit the mark with great, intuitive reporting.

[Manoj]: What excites you most about the new version of VisiStat.

[Tina Bean]: I love the NOTES feature. It’s so great to be able to put a stamp on a date in time that enables you to NOTE what caused the spike in traffic. I think the new, enhanced Page Isolate feature is a marketing person’s dream come true. It provides so much valuable, relevant data about landing pages or any page of your website a the click of a button: (here’s a screenshot)
