Can YouTube Make the Jump to Paid Content?

Today the Hitwise blog took a deeper look into the trends/data around the news that YouTube is launching movie rentals. Summary of the post below:

  • Last week, YouTube ranked 6th among all websites in the US and visitors spent an average of 25 minutes and 25 seconds with the website.
  • YouTube ranked second behind Momo Mesh for websites that receive traffic from the search term ‘movies online’ for the 12 weeks ending January 16, 2010.
  • Last week, among all of the search terms that drove traffic to YouTube, 2179 included the word ‘movie’ or ‘movies’, although 291 also included the word ‘free’.
  • There are many competitors to the new service offering from YouTube including NetFlix, Apple and Amazon. However, in general, NetFlix has become synonymous with movie rentals online and appeared three times in the top ten search term variations of ‘movie rentals’ for the 12 weeks ending January 16, 2010.

YouTube to Charge $5 for Movies

According to the YouTube blog, YouTube has partnered with the Sundance Film Festival to make five films from the 2010 and 2009 festivals available for rent for U.S. users on YouTube starting this Friday and running through Sunday, January 31.

These are early days and in the coming weeks we’ll also invite a small group of partners across other industries, in addition to independent film, to participate in this new option. Anything that brings more content to the YouTube community is a good thing. And making content available for rent will give our partners unprecedented control over the distribution of their work — they can decide the price of their videos and the rental duration; they can decide when and where their content is available; and they can keep 100% of their rights.

The videos will cost around $5 but the exact price will be set by individual filmmakers. Coverage from USA Today mentions that YouTube will split revenues, but will give the lion’s share to the filmmaker.

Gmail Surpasses YouTube in Visits – Hitwise

  • Previously, YouTube consistently ranked 10th among all websites by market share of visits until the week ending Jan. 10, 2009, where Gmail moved up one rank to reach #10. The websites have been swapping positions regularly ever since.
  • Among a custom category of all Google properties, Gmail ranked 2nd behind Google for the week ending Mar. 7th, 2009.
  • Both websites are receiving more visits than one year ago, with a bigger increase in the growth of visits to Gmail. The market share of visits to Gmail has increased 70% for the week ending March 7, 2009 as compared to the same week last year. Visits to YouTube also increased 16% during the same time frame.

Lil Wayne Tops YouTube

Hitwise has compiled a list of the top 50 search terms entered into YouTube’s Web site search for December 2008 reveals that music-related search terms dominate YouTube queries. This custom data, available for the first time, shows that the majority of searches on YouTube are for a band, an artist or a song. Searches for the rapper Lil Wayne ranked first in December 2008.

The top 50 search terms on YouTube accounted for 20 percent of the site’s total search volume in December 2008. Behind music searches, Internet personalities were next most popular searched, followed by miscellaneous searches and then TV searches.

One common trend was the rise of Internet celebrities — particularly Fred, who portrays a self-described 6-year-old with anger management issues. The search term “Fred” ranked as the seventh most searched term overall. Fred is a reminder of the “Internet celebrity” phenomenon (for example, Lonely Girl), where individuals who previously would have been unknown can rise to celebrity status among a niche audience. The search term “Charlie bit my finger” this referring to a popular viral video, ranked 31st.
