Facebook vs. Orkut in India

Three years ago in the early days of social media I wrote a blog post asking people to vote between Facebook and Orkut in regards to their favorite social network. Over 6,000 votes later, we’re still at a deadlock with nearly a 50/50 split in voting. At the time, Facebook was in the early stages of gaining momentum, whereas Orkut was extremely popular in both India and Brazil.

Recently, Hitwise launched some numbers showing the most popular sites in India. While Orkut has traditionally dominated in the social network space in India, the latest data shows that Facebook has even captured top spot (in social networking) there as well. In the graphic from Hitwise below you’ll notice that Facebook sits #3 in the top sites and captures over 5% of all visits whereas Orkut is in the number 8 spot with just over 2% (Google India and Google, well out in front with the top 2 spots).

  • 41% of Facebook users login everyday, 27% of Twitter users login everyday
  • 30% of Facebook users login via mobile, 37% of Twitter user login via mobile
  • 18-25 year olds make up the largest age group on Facebook with a 29% share of users

  • 70% of Facebook users are located outside of the US, 60% of Twitter users are located outside of the US

1 in 4 Page Views in the US took Place on Facebook.com

Very interesting post over at the Hitwise blog last week, which states that Facebook generates 1 out of every 4 pages views in the US. Here are some of the other highlights:

  • In March, they reported an important milestone when the market share of visits to Facebook.com surpassed Google.com (US traffic only and excludes mobile).
  • Since then, Hitwise has continued to watch the growth of Facebook.com, which increased 60% from the same week last year and represented 1 in 10 US Internet visits last week.
  • The amount of content consumption taking place on the popular social network has also grown substantially where nearly 1 in 4 page views in the US took place on Facebook.com for the week ending November 13, 2010.
  • The market share of page views for Facebook.com was 24.27% last week, 3.8x the volume of the 2nd ranked website YouTube.com with 6.93%.

Successful New Facebook Groups – Enhanced Collaboration

As you may have heard, Facebook has launched a new version of Groups. The new Facebook Groups (or Facebook Groups 2.0) are a great way to create a custom space for your colleagues/friends but now with enhanced content sharing abilities compared to its predecessor. When Facebook Groups became popular a few years ago, we wrote a post on how to optimize your group for peak performance, 3 years later we’d like to do the same for Facebook Groups 2.0:
  • Leverage Group Chat: One of the most requested features is now available, invite all active members of your group to a casual chat or even a discussion on industry topics. Group chat takes Facebook group communication to the real time world – a great way to replace individual messages.
  • Why email when you can reGroup? Traditionally we have always relied on group emails with attachments to get our point across, with new Facebook Groups you can introduce multi-way collaboration with your colleagues.
  • Group Notifications: Another limited option from the old Facebook Groups was the fact that your members would have to physically visit the group to see updates on posts/discussions/pictures. In the new Facebook Groups, notifications are sent to all members (who wish to receive them) with all content updates.
  • Customize as Always: Make sure you take advantage of all the customizations possible, ie: profile picture, compelling description, custom email address, unique group name and pictures/videos/docs that your members will find useful.
  • Privacy and Timing: In regards to my customization suggestion, I think timing is really key – just like a blog, don’t make a group public with absolutely no content. Know when to keep it secret and when to move on to private and eventually public.

Facebook Surpasses Google & Yahoo in Time Spent

According to comScore (via MediaPost), Facebook has surpassed both Google and Yahoo in regards to total time spent by users. Facebook now leads the way with 41.1 billion minutes, with Google second at 39.8 billion minutes and Yahoo third, with 37.7 billion. This doesn’t surprise me considering that the purpose of Google is to push traffic to other sites while Facebook’s is to keep users engaged within its environment. You combine that with Facebook’s amazing growth and it’s a natural progression for Facebook to take over the #1 spot in time spent.
