PPC Jobs Salaries Infographic

Salaries and pay rates, as our regular readers know, is one of our running themes here at WAW … and why not! This is an industry that is growing at an incredible rate and where demonstrable skills and experience are at a premium.

At WAW we have been creating our own U.K focussed surveys for a while and so I was keen to share this Infographic I spotted which details USA PPC salaries (it’s shown at the end of this post). So let’s take a look for a moment at what the greatest of all market forces (I mean of course Supply & Demand …not Google!) is doing to internet salaries for PPC specialists.

Put together by Onward Search it concentrates on advertised salaries across the top 20 US Markets. Kicking off with a map showing PPC job postings by location and by number New York, Chicago and San Jose take the 1st 2nd and 3rd slots … no surprise there perhaps however Austin and Seattle don’t look to have been far behind if my eyes are reading the size of the blobs accurately. We think the PPC job titles analysis is interesting … why? Because as we have said before in an emerging and ever evolving industry job titles are new and in many cases didn’t even exist a few years ago. Both employers and job seekers should consider carefully job titles (and not take a guess at them) because as the table shows there are quite significant difference in salary levels not only between geographies but between job titles that may on the face of it appear very similar.  Take a look for example at the differences in Houston based salary ranges for a PPC Analyst ($44-100k) compared to a PPC coordinator ($38-42k)

Although they have titled the infographic PPC jobs it would appear that job titles included have stretched beyond that tight definition since Online Marketing Manager, Account Manager, and Director of Internet Marketing are included in the table – just check your worth against the nearest city and as always … comments welcome!

Social Recruiting: Is it an Equal Opportunity Hazard?

Here is a question for all recruiters and HR professionals: If your organization relies heavily on the use of social media, LinkedIn or search tools to fill your candidate pool – Is there not a risk that you are restricting the supply of talent your business needs by overlooking the potential of the broader market? Are you also risking a breach of Equal Opportunities legislation?

I am more interested in the spirit of Equal Opportunties legislation here than the exact wording or the nuances of the law in different countries. I believe the root of all this legislation is very simple and most people would agree that everyone, regardless of age, gender, race, physical ability, religious belief etc. deserves an equal chance of being employed by you determined by selection criteria based on the job to be done… simple!

Most organizations of any stature have equal opportunity policies (they may even have been legal counsel approved)…job done…? or is there something that has been overlooked? If your process only really kicks in once you have a candidate selection pool… how are you forming that pool in the first instance?

Let’s go fishing for talent

Image of a colorful aquarium with fishThe sea is rich in life. There are species of sealife that can feed you, kill you or cure you. If I am a bit lazy and short of time it’s easy to stand on the banks of a local lake that has been stocked with trout for sportsmen just like me… Caught 7 today … All Trout!   Even if I venture away from the local trout stocked lake and onto the high seas in a boat with only shrimp bait on board it’s a fair bet that we know what we will catch.

The pitfalls of candidate pre-selection

My argument is this. Everybody (even although we try to be aware of the danger) is prone to personal prejudice. If your organzation is overly reliant on Social media and LinkedIn style talent attraction then you run a risk of having a starting pool of talent (i.e. the talent pool that becomes subject to your Equal Opportunity selection policy and from which you select your shortlist for interview) that does not represent the wider market.

After all, not everyone is to be found on social or business network sites  – indeed I wonder if there will be a growing split in the use of these sites with millions creating profiles but also those (especially senior candidates) pulling back from them on concerns over privacy etc.  Add to this the potential personal bias of recruiters when they are searching for talented people and the concern is clear.

Social and Network recruiting – finding the right mix

There are plenty of arguments for using tailored search within Social and Specialist Network sites – the ability to identify candidates in these ways is exciting and been proven time and time again.

I run the risk here of taking the fishing analogy a little too far but remember that if you only ever fish with a few different types of bait you are potentially missing the very special, the unusual and the unknown.

Find ways to engage with those who don’t yet know you and those who simply have never signed up to the networks you are using … sometimes you need to trawl with a much bigger and different shaped net.

5 Tips for New Web Analysts / Strategists

I often receive emails from new web analysts/strategists who are fresh out of University or a year into their Analytics careers asking what they can do enhance their career and how they can fine-tune their skills. Below are 5 tips definitely worth looking into:
  1. Use iGoogle: Using iGoogle will allow you to stay on top of industry trends/tips all in one central place – and the interface rocks! It’s a great way to read what thought leaders have to say across multiple industries. I personally make sure I stay on top of what the following blogs have to say: Search Engine Land, SEO Moz, Search Engine Journal, Marketing Pilgrim, Search Engine Watch and for fun: Tech Crunch, Engadget, GigaOm, ReadWriteWeb and Scobelizer.
  2. Learn complimentary skills: Go beyond analytics because it will allow you to have a more complete understanding of your clients’ online strategies. Knowledge in areas which compliment web analytics quite nicely include: SEO/PPC, Software Development, User Experience, Social Media and Mobile Apps/Web.
  3. Participate in the Community: Join the Web Analytics Association, be active on groups in Facebook/LinkedIn, attend eMetrics, provide feedback on prominent blogs and even offer to guest blog (PS we’re always looking for good bloggers).
  4. Love Technology: I have been very grateful to have used dozens of different types of online technology in my career because it now allows me to quickly provide recommendations on what solutions will provide my clients with the most value (and at what price tag).
  5. Experience the Industry: It’s very useful to have different experiences such as: at an agency, in-house at a large corporation or as a consultant. A colleague of mine put it in words that really made sense to me: One of the main reasons senior strategists (or even senior management) make the big bucks is because of their experiences, they have a multitude of real-life scenarios they call pull inspiration/strategy from and this is a key separator from their junior/intermediate counterparts.
