ClickEquations – Complex Paid Search Campaign Management, Simplified

Last week Alex Cohen, Marketing Manager at ClickEquations sat down with us to give us his first hand insight on the benefits of their paid search product and why marketers should give it a test drive for themselves.

[Manoj]: Give us a brief description of what ClickEquations does and some of its greatest benefits

[Alex Cohen]: ClickEquations is the tool we dreamed of having years ago when we managed paid search accounts directly using other tools or working directly in the engine interfaces. It’s a complete paid search management platform, proving detailed reporting, powerful analysis capabilities, full campaign editing, and bid management. This means that a paid search manager can build, manage, and report on all of their campaigns, in all search engines, from a single interface while both saving time and delivering better results.

We were a paid search agency managing large and complex campaigns in retail, lead gen, and media. So we know the frustration of not being able to get the data you need, of slow reporting interfaces, and of the frustrating multi-step (and often multi-tool) repetitive processes that fill the days of many PPC professionals. Our old pet peeves are directly responsible for the best features in ClickEquations. This is true within our of data, reporting, and editing features.

For example, we aren’t big fans of ROAS as a success metric, so in ClickEquations you can define the actual profit margin for every conversion event and then see net profit and actual ROI results at the keyword, ad group, or campaign levels. This allows much better keyword and bidding decision making. And we knew that search queries are the only way to know which keywords need to be added, which negatives are required, and how to best use Match Types, so we collect and display nearly every search query that drives visitors to your site and let you see the keyword and match type that they were matched too – and we do this for all three search engines. This allows our customers to save money and grow campaigns very quickly.

We went to great lengths to make our reporting interface highly customizable and extremely fast – paid search managers need to slice and dice their data all day long. Looking at different metrics for a single ad group, or rolling up data across campaigns, comparing one date range to another, etc – it’s too painful to have to sit and wait for screens to redraw at each step. Our performance not only saves time, I think it actually encourages or allows managers to do the type of analysis and gain the insights they really need. When the interface is too slow my experience is that after a while you just stop navigating reports, you get worn down by the process.

Even with rich data and a fast, flexible reporting interface, we know paid search managers face a mountain of data every day. It’s nearly impossible to really examine hundreds or thousands of ad groups and tens of thousands of keywords for problems or potential changes. So we have tools and analysis reports that call out these risks and opportunities. A simple one shows all the keywords that are currently below Google’s First Page Bid Estimate. It’s easy for these to go un-noticed for days or weeks without such a report. Another shows you which campaigns are leaving money on the table due to low Impression Share metrics. A more complex example lets you see where keywords are producing great results in one search engine but not in another – offering a quick win by simply copying the winner from engine ‘A’ to engine ‘B’.

[Manoj]: ClickEquations is known for its slick interface, so what makes your interface so good

[Alex Cohen]: I think the core of it comes from the fact that we managed search campaigns ourselves. The most frequent comment we get from people who see us at trade shows or on our weekly webinars is “it’s so clear you guys really understand ppc”. There are all kinds of large and small aspects of our interface and product that come from our deep practical experience in the space.

The other thing about our interface is that we realize the importance of context. Most tools seem to developed with the goal of replicating the AdWords or AdWords Editor interface, supporting three engines, and then adding a few bells and whistles. We think this is a fundamentally flawed approach. The engine interfaces are utilitarian at best, and designed by the seller. They’re trying to make it easy for you to spend money, not necessarily to understand how you’re spending it or spend it wisely. They also over-compartmentalize components – add keywords here, set bids there, edit text ads there – when these element interact and smart changes need to consider these interactions.

[Manoj]: How does attribution fit into your solution?

[Alex Cohen]: This is a great example of where a lack of the right data and clear access to it can really make it hard to make smart paid search decisions. We all know that some users visit sites multiple times before making a purchase. Yet the conversion tracking features from the search engines and most analytics and even paid search tools, give 100% revenue credit to the last keyword.

ClickEquations supports four attribution models – first click, last click, linear, and weighted (which overweights keywords which occur more frequently in successful chains) –so our users can both choose how they want to distribute revenue among keywords and more importantly see and make choices based on the differences. We’re the only vendor, to my knowledge, to allow you to change the attribution model retroactively – you can switch from one to another on-the-fly and then go back and look at historical reports to see the impact.

We also let you apply different attribution models to each bid rule, so you can use a last-click model for your brand terms for example, and a linear model for your category keywords. And finally, we have reports in ClickEquations Analyst (our excel plug-in) that let you see individual keywords and the impact of each attribution model on them for any time period, with helpful conditional formatting to highlight big shifts. All of this drives a better understanding of keyword performance, which can drive better decisions about which keywords to pause or delete and how to set keyword bids. Without visibility into this data, a lot of those decisions are just guesses.

[Manoj]: Tell us a little bit about some of your product specific metrics such as ClickShare and ClickVariance

[Alex Cohen]: Part of our quest for clear detailed data produced the not-so-surprising realization that the search engines aren’t telling us everything we’d like to know. A lot of what they keep private is data that only they have, but some of it is buried in all the data they do provide.

We have developed a series of proprietary metrics that offer additional information and insights to our clients. ClickShare and ClickVariance are two of them. ClickShare is our extension of Impression Share, taking the concept of ‘wh
at you’re missing’ from the Campaign to the Ad Group and Keyword levels. It looks at your CTR, average position, and the CTR of the text-ads being used, and calculates the potential for improvement in clicks. So if an Ad Group had 10,000 impressions and 500 clicks, ClickShare would give you an idea of how many more clicks were possible, and the relative role position and ad-copy play in causing the missed clicks. What this helps you do is prioritize effort – it can call out the ad groups where text-ads are under-performing and you should consider spending time writing new copy to test. Without this metric, if you just looked over the Ad Group report, it would be impossible to tell that in these specific Ad Groups testing could have a 50% impact on click volume, while in those Ad Groups at most it would be likely to only have a 2% impact.

ClickVariance provides a similar service in terms of highlighting Ad Groups where there are too many keywords – not against some arbitrary number that is good or bad – but based on how the keywords in that Ad Group are performing. What we recommend is looking at groups with high ClickVariance numbers, and seeing if there are natural segmentations for the keywords they contain. Usually when you review an Ad Group with a moderate to high ClickVariance, it’s pretty obvious where and how you could split the keywords into two or three groups. This makes it possible to better match the keywords, search queries, ad copy, and landing pages – which leads to higher Quality Scores, lower costs, more profit.

[Manoj]: What is the cost of ClickEquations?

[Alex Cohen]: The ClickEquations fee is based on how much you spend on paid search. It’s typically in the 2%-3% range with a minimum fee of $1,000 per month. Check out our pricing page for full details. Agencies get a discount, because all of their clients’ spend counts toward their total. We have no setup costs and support is free.

Bootstrapping: Weapon of Mass Reconstruction – Interview of Sramana Mitra

Sramana Mitra is a technology entrepreneur and strategy consultant in Silicon Valley. She has founded three companies, writes a weekly column for Forbes, the business blog Sramana Mitra on Strategy, and is the author of the Entrepreneur Journeys book series. Recently, I caught up with Sramana to chat with her in regards to her latest book – Bootstrapping: Weapon of Mass Reconstruction. Check out our conversation below.

[Manoj:] What was the inspiration behind writing this book?

[Sramana Mitra]: I have been observing the dysfunctions of the venture capital industry for years, and in parallel, I notice that in America and elsewhere (especially India), entrepreneurs are quite hung up on raising money, without fully understanding the pros and cons. I felt that if entrepreneurs understood the financing options better, they would bootstrap a lot more, eliminating one of the primary mental blocks to entrepreneurship.

[Manoj:] Tell us how you came up with the title: BootStrapping: Weapon of Mass Destruction

[Sramana Mitra]: Capital markets have slowed, there is a draught in credit and equity financing. Yet, we need entrepreneurship more than ever to jumpstart the job creation engine. Bootstrapping is the only way to do that in this environment. I have recommended policies to support bootstrapped entrepreneurship.

[Manoj:] Why did you choose to interview the individuals you did: Rafat Ali, Wayne Krause, Ramu Yalamanchi, etc…

[Sramana Mitra]: I have interviewed hundreds of entrepreneurs in the last 3 years. I included Rafat’s story because he managed to “create a job” amidst a recession, a story that I felt would be inspiring for others. Wayne, Ramu, Greg, and others are tremendously resourceful people with enormous resilience. They are great role models with much wisdom to share. That’s why I included them in this volume on bootstrapping. They represent the key virtues I wanted to celebrate in this book, including frugality.

[Manoj:] I personally liked the interview with Om Malik (as I read his blog regularly) – what was it like hearing is story and how he achieved success

[Sramana Mitra]: I have known Om quite well for almost a decade. I knew a lot of his story, and I invited him to tell the story to a broader audience because I knew that it was a good, inspiring story, and one that many journalists and writers could draw energy from.

[Manoj:] What would be 3 big things you would want new entrepreneurs to walk away with after reading your book?

[Sramana Mitra]: Inspiration. Confidence. Resolve.

Interview of Sabrina Parsons, CEO of Palo Alto Software

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to catch up with Sabrina Parsons, CEO of Palo Alto Software to discuss Email Center Pro, a web solution that tracks and analyzes multiple email address conversations. Check out our conversation below:

[Manoj]: Can you briefly describe your inspiration behind developing Email Center Pro?

[Sabrina Parsons]: We went through the classic build vs. buy decision when we were looking at tools to improve our communication with customers and partners. We had built a very basic Web-based email product, which we all called “the email center.” About five years ago we knew that we either had to find a new solution, or rebuild the basic solution we were using, as our sales volume went up and we needed a more stable way to communicate via email with our customers and partners. At that time we researched the marketplace and just did not find anything that provided the features we needed. There were customer service help desk options that provided the ability to “ticket,” and there were large CRM solutions that provided too many features we did not need at too high of a monthly cost. So we turned back to our basic email center and re-vamped. We added more of the features we needed, such as the ability to add internal notes to an email, and the ability to assign emails to a certain person. We also rebuilt the system to make sure that it could handle enterprise level email, and of course was secure and redundantly back-up.

[Manoj]: How will Email Center Pro make individuals more efficient?

[Sabrina Parsons]: Email Center Pro is built for efficiencies and for improving work flow. Take your web site, Web Analytics World. I noticed that you have placed your personal email, mjasra@gmail.com as the contact email for people who want to advertise with you. Right now I assume that you handle all the email, and respond to any incoming inquiries. Imagine if you decided you wanted to hire an outside sales person to handle advertising requests. You would have several options:

  1. Leave the email address as is, and forward incoming requests to the ad sales person. This way you could know about all the requests coming in, and then you would forward to the sales rep. Not efficient.
  2. You could make advertise@webanalyticsworld.net the contact email, and then both you and the sales rep could get those emails. You would then need to triage any email that you felt needed special handling or that you wanted that rep to have background information. You would have to forward the email with your message, and then hope the rep responded in a manner that pleased you. There may be a time when an email comes in from a known associate for instance, and you answer it right away – not realizing that the rep has also already answered. Because you both live in your separate email clients you get no visibility into how fast the rep responds, what the answers look like, and whether this rep is representing you well. You could ask the rep the bcc you on every response – but this would clutter your email client even more. Definitely not efficient
  3. You can use Email Center Pro (ECP. You create the advertise@webanalyticsworld.net and either forward it into ECP or use pop access to pull it into ECP. You then create 2 users accounts allowing both your rep and yourself to login and monitor emails. You can create some templates with responses to frequently asked questions — and thus have far less training time for the rep, and make sure you are represented the way you want. You can monitor all out going messages, and you can add notes to any message that the rep can see and reply to — but are always kept internally. You could set expectations about the speed to respond to a request, and using our metrics easily see the reality of how fast responses were sent out. You would no longer have to deal with all the spam associated with an email address that lives on a web page, and you would have all the visibility into your business without the extra email fatigue. Ahh. See how efficient that is!

[Manoj]: How does Email Center Pro integrate with email clients such as Outlook?

[Sabrina Parsons]: Yes. You use Outlook – if it is your client of choice for all the email you deal with exclusively. All email coming into your name@yourcompany.com should go to whatever client you prefer. Email Center Pro is used for general. shared email addresses. ECP can be set up to send alerts (daily or hourly) to your Outlook to inform you when there is a message that you want to know about, or a message is assigned to you. Outlook has some collaboration features if you use Exchange, but for the small business Exchange servers mean extra cost, and lots of IT nightmares. ECP is simple, fast, efficient and VERY cost effective. ECP is an “aside to Outlook” solution for those that want to manage more than just email, but also reduce productivity costs, improve customer email communication and increase ROI.

[Manoj]: Are there any types of reporting metrics available for Email Center Pro?

[Sabrina Parsons]: Yes!! Lots and Lots. Here is a list of the key metrics we provide to ECP account holders:

  1. Mailbox Traffic Distribution- Do you get more email on Mondays than Wednesdays? Do you send more messages in the morning or the afternoon? This bar chart shows average distribution of traffic received and sent by time of day, day of the week, or month, for the mailbox and date range selected.
  2. Mailbox Response Time – This table and chart shows the response times for any mailbox during a given time period. Customize by user, mailbox, and date range. This is an essential management tool. Mailbox Traffic Timeline – Gives a detailed, interactive timeline of mail sent and received for a particular mailbox for the date range selected. See detailed data for a single day, or for the entire time you have used Email Center Pro.
  3. Mailbox Breakdown- This pie chart shows the breakdown of unassigned and assigned messages (by user) for a given mailbox. You can customize this by mailbox, or choose “Any Mailbox” to see assignments across all Inboxes.
  4. User Activity- Shows specific data for each user for the mailbox and date range you choose, such as the number of conversations assigned, number of messages sent, and average response time.
  5. Conversation Tracker- Track starred conversations. See most recent activity on the conversations you care about most.
  6. Account Usage- View a summary of your account usage, in terms of storage, emails received and sent, and your plan level.
  7. Recent Actions- See what’s going on right now in your account, including the most recent logins, responses, notes and tags added, and assignment of emails. Click the conversation or message link to see the full details.
  8. Saved Searches- Saved Searches let you quickly locate conversations that match criteria you choose, using keywords, assignee, mailbox, date received, and more. Click any Saved Search name to see its matching conversations.
  9. Mailbox List- Displays a list of all mailboxes and a count of all conversations in the inbox. div>

[Manoj]: Is Email Center Pro capable of handling a large email load in the case of larger organizations?

[Sabrina Parsons]: Yes. We use it here at Palo Alto Software with over 40 users and thousands of messages in and out every day. We have accounts that have users in the 30′s and 40′ with an enormous amount of incoming and outgoing mail. The service is built to handle enterprise level mail volume, and is hosted on the Cloud using Amazon Web Services. It is secure, redundant, and backed-up with a 99.99% uptime.

A Different View on Page Two

Last week, while chatting with fellow speakers and attendees at SMX Advanced, I had a sudden epiphany: Search engine marketing specialists are concentrating too much on page one search results. Having started in the search industry ten years ago, it never occurred to me that many of today’s search marketers frequently, if not always, regard pages found on the second, third or subsequent pages of the SERPs as failures.

In my mind, that’s a dangerous way to look at the situation. Page one results are certainly a great goal, but there’s more than one way to measure SEO success—and disregarding results in the 11 – 50 range is an enormous mistake. Search marketers need to change the way that they think, and look at these ‘next page’ results as the opportunity that they truly represent—not as a source of constant frustration.

So what’s the opportunity? One word: localization. The results on pages two, three and four are prime candidates for local search optimization. And I’ll talk a little bit more about that exact topic in a near future blog post.
