Twitter Hit by Worm on Saturday

According to the official Twitter blog, this past weekend Twitter was hit by a virus similar to the famous Samy worm which spread across MySpace a little while ago. The attack started Saturday morning with the creation of 4 Twitter accounts which compromised 90 accounts and then later that afternoon another worm hit which compromised an additional 100 accounts.
According to Twitter no passwords, phone numbers, or other sensitive information was compromised as part of these attacks. Below is a snippet on Twitter’s strategies going forward in regards to security attacks.

Every time we battle an attack, we evaluate our web coding practices to learn how we can do better to prevent them in the future. Everything from how it happened, how we reacted, and preventative measures will be covered. In addition to making Twitter stronger and more secure, we will share the information we have learned with our friends at other popular web based services so they can make sure they have the right systems in place for dealing with the same kind of malicious activity.

Omniture Integrates with Twitter

Omniture, Inc. (NASDAQ: OMTR), today announced a new feature for SiteCatalyst customers that allows online marketers to measure brand activity on the popular microblogging site Twitter. This new service offering, developed by Omniture Consulting, is available to all SiteCatalyst customers and is the first online analytics solution providing actionable insight based on Twitter data.

Omniture customers can import Twitter data into SiteCatalyst, allowing them to answer important questions about their business, such as “who is talking about my brand and who are we reaching?” Furthermore, online marketers will be able to identify brand advocates and brand detractors. Product managers can also identify important features requests and recommendations from their most loyal users as they plan their product roadmaps. The SiteCatalyst integration with Twitter data also enables marketers to take advantage of the SiteCatalyst real-time alert feature, which can be used to send e-mails and SMS messages to mobile devices based on pre-determined criteria, such as a spike in mentions of brand-related terms. The integration can also be used to classify Twitter users into marketing segments such as customers, vendors, employees, and more.

In the quickly-evolving environment of Twitter, marketers need actionable insight into what people are saying about their brands. In addition to general brand-related alerts, this solution allows marketers to create an unlimited number of “keyword” reports that will scan full “tweet” text and route relevant “tweets” to corporate employees based upon specific keywords of interest to them. For example, product managers can specify the specific terms they are interested in and receive reports containing all “tweets” mentioning their brand and those keywords without having to manually monitor the Twitter service. This automation saves marketers time and allows them to receive relevant information as needed. Marketers can also use this functionality to monitor competition in a similar manner.

Twitter Marketing Guide: Tips, Best Practices & More

Twitter is one of the most popular social networking applications on the Internet and its popularity continues to grow stronger each day. To me, the rise of Twitter feels a lot like what happened with Facebook early last year. Below is the ultimate guide to Twitter which includes tips, best practices, Twitter marketing strategies and how to’s:

Top 10 Most Popular Twitter Applications

The “Blending the Mix” blog has come up with a very extensive list of the 100 Most Popular Twitter Applications. The list is based on the most bookmarked applications on Delicious. The top 10 most popular Twitter applications are listed below but do check out Blendixing Mix’s blog post for the entire list.
  1. twittervision: A real-time geographic visualization of posts to Twitter. You must have a location and an image defined to appear on the public feed.
  2. twitterfeed: twitterfeed can post directly to twitter, identi.ca, custom laconica installations, and via Ping.fm, simultaneously to the many services supported by Ping.fm.
  3. twhirl: twhirl is a desktop client for the Twitter microblogging service. Most of the features available on the Twitter website are accessible through twhirl, too. Plus, a lot of usability enhancements have been added.
  4. tweetscan: Tweet Scan searches Twitter, identi.ca and other Laconica-based sites with more being added all the time.
  5. twistori: this is the first step in an ongoing social experiment, based on twitter.
  6. twitter-search: There is an undeniable need to search, filter, and otherwise interact with the volumes of news and information being transmitted to Twitter every second. Twitter Search helps you filter all the real-time information coursing through our service.
  7. tweetdeck: TweetDeck is an Adobe Air desktop application that is currently in public beta. It aims to evolve the existing functionality of Twitter by taking an abundance of information i.e twitter feeds, and breaking it down into more manageable bite sized pieces.
  8. twitpic: TwitPic lets you share photos on Twitter. You can post pictures to TwitPic from your phone, our API, or through the site itself.
  9. hellotxt: As you engage with more and more networks, it becomes difficult to maintain meaningful involvement with any of them. People need a way to communicate with all of their networks at once, and HelloTxt solves this problem.
  10. twitterrific: Twitterrific is a fun application that lets you both read and publish posts or “tweets” to the Twitter community website. The application’s user interface is clean, concise and designed to take up a minimum of real estate on your Mac’s desktop.

Twitter Surpasses Digg in Visits

Check out the latest blog post over at the Hitwise blog which details Twitter catching up to Digg in terms of total visits. Below is a summary of the post:
  • Last week, the market share of visits to Twitter surpassed Digg for the first time since launch and was ranked #84 (one above Digg at #85) in the Hitwise Computers and Internet category.
  • A big driver of traffic to Twitter last week was around the US Airways plane crash in to the Hudson River last Thursday, driving many posts and updates about the situation.
  • One major shift that has occurred is the increased traffic to Twitter from Internet users aged 25-34. During the same time frame last year, 12% of Twitter’s traffic was represented by those aged 25 to 34, which has increased to nearly 45% for the 4 weeks ending Jan 17, 2009.
  • Also interesting is Twitter’s clickstream, where Digg relies heavily on traffic from Google (38.8% last week) while Twitter receives a higher share of traffic from social networks, which is mostly due to the applications which integrate the services.
  • One caveat is that a significant amount of twitter activity takes place on mobile devices (especially since there are several twitter apps for the iPhone), which is not measured here, so the impact of Twitter is actually higher than solely web visits. Although this only tells part of the story, judging by the amount of tweets about today’s Presidential election, we’ll continue to see Twitter’s traffic increase.
