ObservePoint: Automated Web Analytics Auditing & Site Monitoring

One of the biggest and most consistent concerns within a website measurement strategy is the quality of the data. This is especially a concern for large sites where new content is regularly added and the analytics implementation is extensive. All of the larger players in the analytics space offer professional services whereby they perform an audit of your web analytics implementation, however this can be quite expensive and isn’t always a regular activity. It is not uncommon for an audit to take north of 100 hours and with today’s consulting rates, you’re looking at a $20K price tag.

Recently I had the opportunity to test drive ObservePoint’s site auditing solution, which automates the complex tasks of web analytics auditing and website monitoring. ObservePoint is a very robust solution in that it supports nearly every major analytics provider as well as every single custom analytics variable from those providers. So whether you need to focus on an sProp in Omniture or a custom variable in Google Analytics, it’s all possible. I thought I’d highlight some of my favourite features from ObservePoint rather than just writing a massive essay:

  1. Site auditing setup time: There are no requirements for additional tagging or coding. Simply plug-in your site details, choose your analytics vendor(s), set your schedule and you’re on your way. You can make your audit more advanced by: selecting a specific user agent, adding custom filters or setting up rules to monitor specific variables.
  2. Granularity of analytics vendor variables: If you looked at the level of variables ObservePoint can monitor, you’d swear that they essentially took every single analytics implementation guide and dropped it into their system.
  3. Transaction Monitoring: The ability to monitor a series of URLs as part of a process such as signups, shopping carts, or any other transaction. Now take it a step further, use the data from ObservePoint combine it with revenue per goal data and you’ve got yourself a pretty important metric that ties site performance to dollars.
  4. The Value Ads: Alerts to email/mobile devices, ‘Silent Mode’ so that there are no extra page views in your reports, several server location options for site monitoring, live support (chat) to answer your burning questions immediately, and tag support for beyond analytics such as: DART, ComScore, Quantcast and Website Optimizer.
  5. A free Firefox plug-in to help you assess page level tagging, JavaScript, HTML, image size or CSS issues.

Real Time Analytics with LiveStats by GoSquared

Earlier this week I sat down with James Gill, CEO of GoSquared. During our chat James was able to give some great insight on their flagship product, LiveStats (real time analytics). Have a read of our conversation below:

[Manoj]: Give us the ‘elevator pitch’ on your technology

[James Gill]: We’ve been in the real-time analytics space for about a year now, and just released the 3rd version of our flagship product LiveStats.

LiveStats gives you an overview of the popularity of your website in real-time by showing which articles across your sites are popular, and who is referring your traffic to make such content popular. LiveStats makes it really easy to adjust and refine your content in real-time to improve its focus on the audience that is reading it.

[Manoj]: Can you please highlight some of the features which provide the most value?

[James Gill]: One of the most “wow” invoking features of LiveStats is Map View – click on the small map in the top right to make the map full-screen, and see every visitor currently on your website in real-time.

One of the features where GoSquared is truly ahead of anyone is the Visitor list – GoSquared ties all page views to visitor sessions, and allows you to see how each of your visitors flows through your site, from referrer, to each page and how long they’ve spent on each page, to exit. You can grab all of the details about any visitor on your site right now, including their location, operating system, browser, screen size, even whether they have Flash installed.

[Manoj]: Who is your intended target market?

[James Gill]: Our target market is medium to large blogs and news sites (predominantly), who need to respond to their visitors immediately.

[Manoj]: What’s a good example of how someone would leverage GoSquared?

[James Gill]: A great use case is when you’ve written an article, and it is linked to from a site that you didn’t expect. You may have written an article about the Xbox Kinnect with some quite technical terms, and find that a national newspaper site links to you – with GoSquared you can respond to this immediately and jump in and alter the article to match the audience reading it right now.

[Manoj]: Anything Else?

[James Gill]: We have a variety of plugins available for WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, and more coming soon. We also have completely seamless integration with the popular OS X website building app called RapidWeaver by Realmac software. GoSquared also provides an API which allows developers to pull out any of the data they need for their own site and build exciting apps around real-time traffic data.

Real Time Travel Guides From TripTwit

TripTwit is web start up that provides real-time travel guides. It aggregates data from thousands of travel and local Twitter accounts to provide visitors with real-time information on their destination.

When you select a city from TripTwit you will see a real-time stream of tweets from local sources like restaurants, museums and attractions. You can further refine the results through filtering and searching. For example, you can see tweets just from hotels or search for “free” things to do. There are also tabs for Local Deals and Travel Deals which automatically extract tweets that provide information on saving money.

Both travel and real-time search are competitive areas right now as seen with Google’s acquisition of ITA and Bing rolling out real-time search features. Even Twitter itself is constantly enhancing their real-time search capabilities. TripTwit is an interesting entrant into the field.

TripTwit currently offers travel guides for 16 American cities.

TripTwit real-time results for New York city, searchable by keyword or business type.

Concept Feedback: Expert Feedback for Apps, Landing Pages & Interfaces

I was very intrigued when I first heard about Concept Feedback and how their usability/design services could add more value to wire-frames, landing pages, and apps. So I decided to call upon, CEO Andrew Follett for some first hand insight. Have a read below:

Give us the ‘elevator pitch’ on your technology

ConceptFeedback.com offers quick, actionable website feedback from a hand-selected panel of experts in design, usability, and strategy. Evaluations are completed in 48 hours or less using written and visual feedback tools, which make it easy to organize and prioritize recommendations. Concept Feedback is ideally suited for businesses, analysts, and marketing professionals looking for specific recommendations to optimize website performance.

Can you please highlight some of the features which provide the most value?

  • Feedback is formatted in a way that makes it easy to organize and prioritize (see review-tools.jpg). You can take the recommendations straight to your team (or management) and start improving your website immediately.
  • Feedback is both written and visual. Our experts can provide markup directly on a client’s screenshots which make it easy to quickly identify and resolve issues.
  • Feedback is fast. We guarantee feedback in 48 hours or less.
What is your competitive advantage over similar technology?

We’re somewhat unique in that we are dedicated to providing website feedback from design, usability, and strategy experts. There are other companies out there offering website optimization evaluations, but we are the only dedicated service out there (that I know of). We also provide the quickest service (48 hours) and arguably the best review formatting (easy to organize and prioritize).

Who is your intended target market?

Small and medium sized businesses, and marketing professionals. Small businesses typically lack the budget and expertise to get outside, objective 360 feedback on a project. We also help web design and development companies, as well as usability experts, get independent feedback and recommendations for their clients.

Tell us about new features/integrations/improvements that are on your product road map

In the next few months, we’ll be adding some feedback management tools for our clients. These will allow clients to print and share feedback, as well as drag and drop recommendations to create an on-the-fly priority list.

Performable: Customer Centric, Actionable Analytics

Performable offers a full-circle approach to analytics, in addition to tracking clickstream/website usage, Performable takes it a step farther by providing recommendations on how to improve that experience. Recently I sat down with their VP Products, Joshua Porter to get some further insight into Performable.

[Elevator Pitch]: Performable makes actionable analytics easy. There are three major hurdles with analytics packages today:

  1. Not Customer Centric – Most analytics packages are “web-only” analytics packages…focusing on the single channel of the Web and working within a paradigm focused on “uniques”, “pageviews” and “form submissions” or leads. This old model is going away.

At Performable we focus on customers and how you interact with them over multiple channels so that you know where you should invest your time and resources. We see the new paradigm of web analytics as being customer-centric, with people as the organizing principle. Therefore our views are centered around what individuals are doing…even down to a customer’s entire clickstream history, and also zoomed out far enough to compare successful customers with unsuccessful ones.

  2. No Actionability. Mountains of data with no clear actions. Analytics packages are amazing at gathering data…in fact they’re too good. They have so much data that most people simply get lost in it…they often wonder “Now that I have this data…what do I do about it?” We’ve spoken with tons of people who have analytics packages installed but they just don’t know what to do with them…they are completely overloaded with information.

We’re solving this problem with Smart Suggestions. So we built into Performable Analytics a set of suggestions about *what to actually do*…we mine the data we’re collecting and give you actionable next steps about how to change your design, improve your traffic flow, or prioritize your content. Instead of having a mountain of data with no direction, we give you a some real direction while hiding unnecessary data.

  3. Painful, Expensive, & Slow. Huge setup costs & resource commitment. Enterprise level analytics packages are a gigantic up-front and time-consuming resource commitment. Not only will you pay tens of thousands of dollars just to get started, but you will have to dedicate several people internally just to get analytics installed on your web site or application. Then, you often have to hire consultants just to keep things going…

We’re solving this problem with One-step installation. One piece of Javascript that never changes. No costly getting started services, no expensive installation cost. Just start quickly and get insights fast. We want to make analytics easy, fast and powerful

[Notable Features]: Sure, here are some of the features that our customers are most excited about:

  1. Smart Suggestions – Performable Analytics gives you smart suggestions for what to actually do based on the analytics data collected. We make analytics actionable.
  2. Person-centric Analytics – Instead of being focused on page views, Performable Analytics is focused on people…your customers and potential customers. As people visit your web site, we create customer profiles on the fly that grow richer over time…these profiles include any publicly-available social network information, number of times visited, what they did (including clickstream data), etc. After a while you have a customer profile for every one of your current customers…a gigantic time saver (not to mention making your experience feel that much closer to your actual customers)
  3. Multi-channel Analytics – Instead of doing a deep dive into a mountain of analytic data, Performable tells you straight-away which channels are working best for you…which ones are sending the best traffic and which are converting most to your critical conversion events. We also allow multi-channel attribution for any campaign you might be running, whether it be in email or some other channel. You can easily compare channels against each other to see which are working best.
  4. Cohorts – Customer Engagement is a huge problem for online businesses. Performable Analytics provides an insightful cohort analysis that shows you how engaged your customers are over time. You can tell if you’re getting better at engaging customers or getting worse and most importantly…what to do about it.

[Competitive Advantage]: We have assembled a world class team of Web Analytics, Lead Generation and User Experience experts. Together we bring a unique point of view on the future of web analytics. We believe the future of web analytics is customer-centric and multi-channel. Enterprise Web Analytics still suffers from being painful to implement, expensive to buy and difficult to customize. We have no baggage to slow us down, we are taking the best practices we’ve learned from the B2C & B2B worlds and applying them to the Enterprise Web Analytics & Optimization space. Our product focuses on improving your online customer experience and performance.

[Target Market]: Our intended target market is marketing professionals. CMOs, Directors of Marketing, and Marketing Managers.

[Upcoming Features]: Well, we don’t discuss unreleased products but I can say we’re working on making analytics easier by integrating it with the tools that marketers already use. We’re working on direct integration between analytics and marketing automation tools, for example. We’ll continue to provide actionable insights to customers without them having to dive deep into a mountain of confusing data…we’re committed to making analytics actionable and easy.

Clicky Analytics – Intuitive Reporting and Impressive Feature Set

With features like Real-time tracking, Twitter Analytics, an iPhone version, Video Analytics, APIs, and white-labeling on top of a solid analytics platform, Clicky is a force to be reckoned with in the analytics space. Clicky competes with the likes of Google Analytics, Statcounter and Woopra, but has heavily optimized it’s services to compete with them head to head without worry. I sat down with the Clicky team last week and got some insight into their analytics product:

[The Elevator Pitch]: There are three reasons we believe Clicky is successful. First, it’s real time. Not as big a deal these days but when we launched, there weren’t that many. Second, we show you individual visitors and every action they had on your site, including page views, downloads, outbound links, and javascript events (e.g. ajax, drop down menus, etc). Smaller sites in particular *love* being able to see details down to the individual level. Third, our interface is very clean and extremely easy to use. A lot of services have steep learning curves, and/or they are very ugly and/or dated. Clicky is clean and almost everyone just “gets it” immediately. This is a really big deal, I can’t tell you how many of our customers swear we are the only analytics service they’ve ever been happy with. We really only get support requests for a few of the more complex (and optional) features, such as goal and campaign tracking.

[Target Market]: We don’t really have a target market. The service works well for bloggers, businesses, ecommerce sites, forums, pretty much anything. The only type of customer that I’d say is not our target market is high traffic enterprise sites, say Amazon or Apple, things like that. They have very complex needs and would be better served by the likes of Google Analytics, Omniture, etc.

[Upcoming Features]: Currently we are working on a massive overhaul to the entire web site. The main purposes of this are to make it easier to navigate through various areas of the site, as well as make it a lot faster. The entire thing is Ajax-based and makes the site about 2-3x faster as you move between pages. This isn’t really a “feature” though, just a new paradigm. In terms of features, what we have on the roadmap for the near future is multi-variate testing, more social network integration (monitoring conversations about your site/business), and another feature we’re keeping secret for now that’s designed for bloggers and other content-oriented sites.

[Price]: Free accounts are available for websites with less than 3,000 daily page views and accounts go up to “Super Pro” for sites with 100K daily page views (@ $20/month).
