What’s in a name! … SEO is an area where titles are still very much evolving however there appear to be distinct differences emerging between the titles Executive, Specialist or Consultant and Manager. (GRAPH BELOW – DATA OCT/NOV/DEC 2011)
SEO Manager
Average 33.9k, Median Range 31-36k, 28% in 26-31k range
SEO Specialist / SEO Consultant
Average 30.0k, Median Range 26-31k, 36% in 26-31k
SEO Executive
Average 25.9k, Median Range 21-26k, 41% in 21-26k
At the Executive level, whether for a direct employer or for an agency delivering for its clients, there are often practical activities and execution of reporting, KPI analysis, off site and onsite SEO , keyword research and tracking and ongoing liaison with the wider team of copywriters , developers and PR etc….
Specialists and Consultants are often titles used to indicate client interactions and perhaps some strategic input.
Manager jobs will typically involve just that! – i.e. management of people and resources in addition to a high level of technical competency.
There are of course no fixed boundaries between the titles and every employer naturally approaches this in a different way however if you are an employer looking to place a job advert or perhaps on the search for a new job yourself it’s perhaps worth bearing in mind how much is “in a name”.
